The SNAP Festival 2022 exhibition sheds light on the sex workers who use painting, drawing, craft techniques or any type of graphic creation to interrogate their experience.

The title, Pute et Peintre (Whore and Painter), was chosen in reference to the famous Grisélidis Réal who asked to have the epitaph “writer, painter, prostitute” engraved on her tombstone. This year, the SNAP Festival wishes to pay her a particular vote of gratitude. It is also the title of an episode of the Belgian show Strip-tease filmed in 1986, in which we see Dolly working behind her window in Schaerbeek, painting large-format canvases between two clients. Lastly, it is what Maïa Izzo-Foulquier – who passed away much too early at the age of 28 – painted on a public wall in her video-performance Curriculum Vitae.

The exhibition Whore and Painter will offer a wide range of world visions from the perspectives of heterogeneous sex workers who belong to different generations.

The exhibition is visible at Beursschouwburg until 17th of June.

While Belgium has recently become the second country in the world to recognize sex workers in their right to exist, economic activities related to sexuality remain internationally criminalized – in many different ways.

This panel discussion is an opportunity to define decriminalization and the issues it encompasses, to look back at the victorious legislative battle for sex workers’ rights that was waged in Belgium, and to identify the new forms of discrimination against sex workers.

Online sex work and its tools have particularly developed in the last decade. Today, they can take many forms, ranging from sex cam to subscription-based social media and self-production of pornographic videos, alone or in teams.

In this Focus, content creators who use a variety of these methods will explain what these practices cover: from the understanding of technical issues to the physical preparing for a sexual performance – not forgetting pornophobic policies and censorship at work, they will lay bare their personal and creative relationship to online sex work.

There is currently no documentary about adult content creators that complies with the adage “Nothing about us, without us”. Therefore, Carmina and Prune, both sex workers, decided to give the floor to the interested parties in order to dismantle the “easy money” myth that is wrongly associated to this business.

They will show an excerpt from their film-to-be. They will explain the difficulties that they have encountered and the importance of their work, particularly given the hostility of international legislations. They will discuss the creativity, the personal and professional development, the freedom allowed by these professions – but also the disadvantages such as stigma, social isolation, burnout…

Carmina started as an erotic model in 2014 and has been a sex worker ever since. In 2017, she co-directed the documentary “Amateurs Professionnels” which publicized the camgirl profession. She works as a director and porn performer for her label Carré Rose Films. She is also an expert in pornography and editor-in-chief of Tag Parfait, an online magazine about porn culture, which she took over in April 2019.

Prune started as an erotic model for the “Suicide Girls” website in 2014, and then became camgirl. In 2020, she specialized in creating independent adult content, and is active on multiple platforms.

Axel and Yoshi are both performers and porn directors. In their performance, they will call attention to their physical preparations – and more specifically to the practice of Fisting. They will coordinate a live shoot on stage, giving instructions to the cameramen/women while engaging in an unprecedented sexual performance that will be broadcasted live.

Axel Abysse

Axel steps into life as an introverted and unconfident kid who dwells on his dreams and gives shape to his fantasies through writing or drawing on sketchbooks. Later, in Paris and then Japan, he discovers the art of fisting, and starts to explore photography, and then filmmaking using his obscene self as a model. His self-made experimental and pornographic pieces have met a lot of attention and success worldwide!

Yoshi Kawasaki

Yoshi Kawasaki has always dreamed of being a porn actor. During his explorations in Japan, California and London, he came upon PrEP and PeP. Once he discovered the taste of bareback, he knew there was no turning back for him. Now an established XXX adult entertainer, porn director, and as you all know a cock-hungry whore, he will take you on his erotic journeys through the land of the rising sun and beyond!

Focus : WORDS OF WHORES

17h – Beurscafé

The use of writing practices is a common tool for reclaiming one’s voice in media space, especially in repressive socio-economical contexts.

What narratives do sex works give of themselves? What stories do they hand out for us to hear – and in which forms?

Poetry, autobiography, analysis of practice, political pamphlet… Sex workers create original and ingenious forms of writing to give a voice to their political intimacy.

In this discussion panel, five sex workers will explore the different literary processes they go through to produce knowledge and to share their experience.

With Djone, Sonia Verstappen, Maîtresse Diane, Kay Garnellen, Klou

Words mingle with images and sounds: they read, slam, murmur, sing their verses and their prose. During 1 hour, the Beurscafé will stage performed readings and open mics.
